Your Immune System Needs Your Help

The immune system is an important network of organs, cells and substances in the body. Its primary function is to help fight off disease and any type of bacterial, viral and fungal infections. The immune system is also responsible for eliminating any dead or diseased cells in the body.

Your-Immune-System-Needs-Your-HelpThe organs of the immune system include the bone marrow (our immune cell factory), the thymus (our T-cell producer), the spleen (our immunological blood filter) and the lymph system (our bodily fluid filter). We also have a number of cellular defenses such as B and T cells, Natural Killer Cells and Macrophages.

Many factors can have a negative impact on immune function such as poor nutrition, toxins, and stress. The production of immune cells is heightened during times of stress, helping our body to repair itself if injured. However, chronic stress can lead to immune system depletion. For example, the stressed out individual who works too much notices that she tends to get sick as soon she goes on vacation or “stops” for any reason.

There are a number of ways to boost your immune system in order to minimize sickness and increase energy levels. The first thing you can do is eat healthy. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains will help to protect your body. Substances such as alcohol, nicotine and caffeine should be reduced or avoided if possible. Other healthy daily habits include exercising, drinking plenty of water, getting a full night of sleep and finding ways to reduce stress.
