TED Talks Mental Health Series: No Health without Mental Health

In his TED talk titled “No Health Without Mental Health”, Denny Morrison challenges three commonly held myths about mental health. The first is the stigma associated with mental illness or substance use. The second challenge that Denny addresses is the belief that the mind and body are two separate entities. His third focal point is the misconception of deeming mental health conditions as catastrophic, with no hope in sight,

Unfortunately, society does not address these issues when they initially appear, which is likely due to the stigma surrounding them and the overall lack of resources for prevention as an approach to treatment as a whole. This essentially leads to the further decline of the individual, as seeking help becomes an obstacle.

Mental health conditions and substance use disorders are treatable. Like any other illness, it is best to diagnose and treat as early as possible. People are more likely to admit their physiological conditions rather than mental illness. This magnifies the stigma that is associated with mental health conditions. By creating an environment that is conducive to acceptance, WestBridge challenges the stigma by striving to achieve treatment goals through collaboration, education, and amplifying awareness.

Denny’s talk also raises awareness on suicide prevention. The struggle itself should not be addressed alone. WestBridge supports the long-term recovery of individuals and families who experience co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders by providing residential and outpatient evidence-based treatment. Our co-occurring disorders treatment empowers participants to succeed in maintaining a healthy lifestyle upon recovery.

The education and support services that WestBridge provides for participants and their families are key components of our co-occurring disorders treatment. Our Family Education and Support (FES) program is designed to help families understand mental health and substance use disorders. We provide education to families to understand the factors that contribute to the development of symptoms of both mental illness and substance use disorders, as well as symptom management and treatment goal planning. Through relationship building, education, collaboration, problem solving, and an atmosphere of hope, our Family Education & Support program helps reduce tension and stress, and encourages support within families.

Our comprehensive treatment programs offer tools that families can use to help facilitate recovery for their loved ones. Our staff also informs families about the underlying causes of mental illness and substance use disorders. Through a community support initiative, we work together to identify the various roles in the treatment process, and foster a process of recovery for the entire family.
