TED Talks Mental Health Series: Johann Hari on Addiction

Johann Hari’s TED talk on addiction is a poignant account of his journey, as he watched loved ones struggling to manage their addictions and chemical dependencies. His discussion includes living in a culture where people feel really increasingly vulnerable to all sorts of addictions, ranging from smartphone use to shopping and eating.

Rather, Johann dives into why the attitude and perception towards addiction has created a climate of isolation, which in turn becomes a failed method of approaching the very relevant issues surrounding addiction.

Individual recovery is crucial; however, the missing piece to the puzzle lies in social recovery. Johann discusses the social aspects of stigmatization and isolation that hinders recovery for people struggling with substance use and addiction. Relationships, bonding, and social support are long-term and hopeful solutions for recovery, as the previous models of treatment have reinforced stereotyping and stigmatization. Labeling and focusing solely on the physical addiction component overrides the other issues that contribute to substance use disorders, which in turn hinders the journey to recovery.

Fostering and nurturing an environment of personal relationships for support is emphasized in Johann’s TED talk. While we may feel connected via technology or social media, the interpersonal support that is needed for successful long-term treatment must not be minimized.

Parallel to Johann’s innovative talk regarding addiction, Westbridge’s marathon-themed campaign provides ongoing support as a commitment to long-term care. Similar to participating in a marathon, the journey towards healthy recovery requires preparation, training, encouragement, and team participation.

Our staff and treatment team understands the discouragement and isolation that families often experience as they struggle to find a solution for loved ones with mental health issues and substance use disorders. We highlight the importance of teamwork and collaboration in helping individuals and families succeed in their treatment.

Westbridge’s participants are encouraged to tailor their treatment with their individual hopes, goals, and dreams. Families and support systems are part of the solution that supports long term recovery. Support systems are established for participants to transition with confidence back into their communities.
