Mental Health is as Important as Physical Health

Mental-Health-is-as-Important-as-Physical-HealthMental health disorders are sometimes referred to as “invisible” illnesses. The reason for this is that the symptoms cannot necessarily be seen externally. You cannot diagnose them with the naked eye as you could a runny nose, a broken leg or a black eye. The fact that these illnesses are unseen is a big reason why stigma surrounding mental health disorders exists.

Yet, their invisibility does not make mental health disorders any less real. They are maladies of the brain with real physiological causes and symptoms. Moreover, they can have an enormous impact on your overall well-being.

In fact, while mental illness may itself be clearly visible, it can lead to plenty of related conditions that manifest in profoundly physical ways. Those living with serious mental health disorders face an increased risk of chronic medical conditions. In addition, adults living with serious mental illnesses die on average 25 years earlier than other Americans, largely due to treatable health conditions.

The link between mental and physical health is indisputable—and encompasses everything from balance to heart health, from sleep disorders to general physical maladies.

It is in the best interest of physical health to make mental health a priority, but how does one go about it?

  • Surround yourself with people who love and encourage you.
  • Value yourself; show some self-love, and affirm yourself daily.
  • Practice gratitude, journaling about the things you are thankful for.
  • Find a creative outlet for your stress.
  • Spend some time in quiet and solitude each day, perhaps in meditation.
  • Be patient with yourself; make an effort not to beat yourself up over past mistakes.
  • Do not allow yourself to settle into a rut; set new goals and plan new adventures.

It is important to take care of the body. Start by taking care of the mind.
