July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, which aims to improve access to mental health treatment and services for multicultural communities. According to the Office of Minority Health, nearly two-thirds of people with a diagnosable mental illness do not seek treatment, and racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. are even less likely to get help.

Stigma can make people reluctant to discuss their mental health needs with friends or family, or even their health care providers. Racial and ethnic diversity requires mental health treatment to encompass the various challenges marginalized groups may experience. For example, seeking help may be seen as a weakness, or substance use issues may be concealed because of associated shame and stigma.
