Mental Health Holds No Discrimination

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, which aims to improve access to mental health treatment and services for multicultural communities. According to the Office of Minority Health, nearly two-thirds of people with a diagnosable mental illness do not seek treatment, and racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. are even less likely to get help.

WestBridge shows that help is available and recovery is possible. Mental health issues affect communities of all backgrounds, and both individuals and families are impacted by mental illness.

Culturally competent care is a major factor for those seeking treatment. Stigma can make people reluctant to discuss their mental health needs with friends or family, or even their health care providers. Racial and ethnic diversity requires mental health treatment to encompass the various challenges marginalized groups may experience. For example, seeking help may be seen as a weakness, or substance use issues may be concealed because of associated shame and stigma.

Through our supportive programs, WestBridge brings together an interdisciplinary team to address substance use and mental illness. We provide a supportive and accessible community that facilitates recovery for individuals and their families.

It is possible to successfully recover from substance use disorders. Our services have helped people reclaim their lives and positively contribute to their families and communities. WestBridge has built a strong network of peers, families and professionals to help promote cultural norms that advocate for improved health and wellness for everyone.
