WestBridge’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides structured, intensive daytime treatment for adults experiencing moderate to severe mental health and substance use challenges. Designed as a higher level of outpatient care, the program combines group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, case management, and family support in a compassionate clinical environment. Participants attend five days per week while returning home each evening, allowing them to receive comprehensive treatment without inpatient hospitalization. WestBridge specializes in treating psychosis, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and co-occurring substance use disorders through an integrated, evidence-based approach.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

PHP provides structured, intensive mental health and substance use treatment in a supportive outpatient setting. It is designed for individuals experiencing moderate to severe psychiatric symptoms or substance use disorders that interfere with daily functioning, who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy but do not require 24-hour inpatient hospitalization.

Who is a good candidate for PHP treatment?

The program is designed for individuals experiencing moderate to severe psychiatric symptoms, emotional distress, or substance use disorders that interfere with daily functioning.

What conditions does the PHP treat?

The program treats moderate to severe psychiatric symptoms, emotional distress, and substance use disorders. WestBridge specializes in treating psychosis, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and PTSD, with or without substance use disorders.

Do you treat both mental health and substance use together?

Yes, We treat both “mental health and substance use treatment” together.

How is PHP different from inpatient or residential treatment?

PHP does not involve overnight stays, participants do not need 24-hour inpatient hospitalization, and PHP can serve as a step-down from residential or inpatient care.

How is PHP different from Intensive Outpatient (IOP)?

PHP is a higher level of care with programming occurring 5 days per week whereas IOP programming occurs 3 days per week. Both programs include group therapy, individual therapy and case management however PHP also includes medication management and access to our on call clinicians 24/7 for crisis intervention.

Do I stay overnight or go home each day?

PHP is an outpatient setting, and participants do not require 24-hour hospitalization, meaning they go home each day.

How many hours per day does PHP require?

PHP runs five hours per day.

How many days per week do I attend?

Participants attend PHP five days per week, Monday through Friday for 5 hours each day.

Can I attend PHP if I am currently working or in school?

Though many people take time away from school or work to attend PHP due the time commitment, if work or school hours fall outside of the PHP schedule, an individual can attend both.

What does a typical day in PHP look like?

Each day starts with goals group to check in on individual goals. Then, participants engage in three different groups (which vary by day) before closing the day with a progress group, reflecting on the growth and progress made. Lunch is provided mid-day between groups.

What types of services are included?

Treatment services include comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, family services, crisis intervention and safety planning, and case management and aftercare planning.

Are there both group and individual therapy sessions?

WestBridge’s PHP includes both individual therapy and group therapy sessions.

What therapy approaches do you use (CBT, DBT, trauma therapy)?

The curriculum includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Enhanced-Illness Management & Recovery, Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Seeking Safety (a trauma-informed approach), and Wellness Recovery Action Plan, among others.

Is medication management included?

Yes, WestBridge offers comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management in PHP.

Will I work with a psychiatrist or medical team?

PHP participants will have regular meetings with WestBridge psychiatric providers to assist with medication management, care coordination, and psychiatric evaluation.

Can I attend if I’m taking psychiatric medication?

Yes, many PHP participants are prescribed psychiatric medications. As part of the pre-admission process, we request a copy of your current medication list so our psychiatric providers can be informed of your current medication regimen.

What if I’m already seeing a therapist?

If you wish to continue seeing your current therapist, you may do so, but your insurance provider may not cover the cost of seeing your therapist if you see them on the same day you receive PHP services.

Can family members be involved in treatment?

Yes, families are encouraged to be involved in their loved ones treatment as long as the individual in care provides written consent.

What happens if I relapse during treatment?

If you have a recurrence, the treatment team will meet with you to evaluate your needs and work with you to develop a plan to ensure your safety. This will include assessing immediate clinical needs and if remaining in PHP is the appropriate level of care.

How long does a PHP program usually last?

Individuals have found to benefit the most by attending programming between 4–6 weeks.

When can I start treatment?

After completing a few steps which include 1) a Verification of Benefits with your insurance, 2) an intake questionnaire (available on our website), 3) for our team to review of the most recent mental health record (which may be notes from a psychiatrist, therapist, a recent hospitalization, or residential treatment program) and 4) completing a level of care assessment over the phone with our admissions team. If no additional documentation is clinically necessary, an intake date will be arranged that works with your schedule.

Do I need a referral to enter the program?

Referrals are not necessary to enter any WestBridge program.

Does insurance cover PHP treatment?

Our PHP is in-network with most commercial insurances as identified on our Insurance and Financing page. While health insurance may help to offset your financial investment in treatment, any WestBridge services not contracted for or not covered by your personal health plan are billed on a self-pay basis. As every plan differs, prior to admission, we complete a verification of benefits and provide a complementary financial consultation to each individual inquiring about our services.

What should I bring with me each day?

WestBridge may provide program materials for PHP participants to use during groups, but individuals do not need to bring any of their own belongings to a PHP session.

How do you measure progress in treatment?

Every PHP participant will meet with their PHP therapist to create a treatment plan based on their individual treatment goals. Progress in treatment will be measured as it pertains to those goals.

What happens after PHP treatment ends?

When ready to transition, each participant is assisted in developing a transition plan tailored to their needs and goals, whether to another level of care at WestBridge or another treatment program.

Will I transition to an IOP or outpatient program?

The most common aftercare recommendation following successful completion of a PHP is to enroll in an IOP. WestBridge does offer a mental health focused IOP with morning and afternoon sessions that many PHP participants have successfully stepped down into. If the treatment team does not feel that IOP will be necessary, recommendations for outpatient therapists may be provided.

What support is available after completing PHP?

For individuals who complete WestBridge’s PHP and require a higher level of care, we offer our residential program, The Commons. For individuals looking to step down to a lower level of care, we offer a mental health focused IOP with morning and afternoon sessions. Additionally, all participants are eligible to attend WestBridge alumni program events.
