National Rx Drug Abuse Summit
Although 2.3 million people received treatment at a substance abuse facility in 2011, SAMHSA estimates that an additional 19.3 million people did not receive treatment who needed it. Opioid use disorders continue to affect America in epidemic proportions. The story of people getting addicted to prescription opioids keeps happening despite valiant efforts at prevention and treatment. One study set out to determine whether persons who are dependent on prescription opioid analgesics can be helped by adding one-on-one drug counseling to their traditional treatment of buprenorphine/naloxone.
This session compares current practices in the field of treating opiate abuse and addiction with recent scientific discoveries in that field. It then offers suggestions on how to bring these practices up to speed with these discoveries. Also, the results of the Prescription Opioid Addiction Treatment Study will be discussed in order to determine how best to use buprenorphine.
