Top 12 Mental Health Moments of the Year

Top-12-Mental-Health-Moments-of-the-YearAs we bring 2015 to a close, we look back on a year that was truly great for all of us here at WestBridge—and, great for growing awareness about mental health issues in general.

More and more, the media and the general public have considered mental health from a position of true empathy and compassion, the stigma that has for so long surrounded these issues gradually wearing down. We still have a long way to go, and much work left to do—yet we are encouraged by some of the signs of progress we saw in 2015.

To illustrate, here are a dozen of the year’s most encouraging mental health moments—both from here at WestBridge and beyond!

  1. The White House announced a new endeavor to change the language surrounding addiction—helping break down some of the stigma surrounding this particular disorder.
  1. Kate Middleton spoke out against stigma. Her words carry real power and influence, and we are pleased to see her giving voice to such an important issue.
  1. New research revealed that psychosis is treatable—and that early intervention makes all the difference in the world.
  1. Political leaders across the country rallied behind new mental health initiatives, including New York City mayor Bill de Blasio.
  1. The Senate approved new research into the effects of combat on mental health. Hopefully this will yield real solutions for the ongoing epidemic of PTSD and veteran suicide.
  1. WestBridge launched “Running With You.” We remain proud of our awareness-building, marathon-themed campaign!
  1. The World Health Organization made a strong stand for mental health. Learn more about the Mental Health Gap Action Program!
  1. More people joined the fight against substance use disorders.
  1. WestBridge team members continued to share their passion and their expertise. 
  1. Advocates from across the country spoke out against stigma and stereotypes. Here’s just one example.
  1. We continued to raise awareness and spread education through our radio show. One Hour at a Time is going strong, and making a difference in the lives of many participants and caregivers!
  1. The WestBridge team engaged in ongoing advocacy for open dialogue about mental health—and, in turn, pushed for the end of stigma!
