Kick-Butts-and-Be-Tobacco-FreeKick Butts Day is approaching! Are you ready for it? March 16, is a nationwide day of empowerment, encouraging young people to stand up, speak out, and seize control from Big Tobacco.

That’s a noble goal. Tobacco can have a ravenous effect on the body and the mind—but the health benefits of quitting smoking are vast. It is why we are proud to provide participants with a tobacco-free campus.

What are some of the health benefits of quitting smoking? Consider:

  • Normalized, healthy blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Normalized blood oxygen and carbon monoxide levels.
  • Lowered anxiety levels.
  • Regrowth of damaged nerve endings—including improved sensations of taste and smelling.
  • Easier breathing and improved lung functioning.
  • Improved blood circulation around gums and teeth.
  • Lowered risk of heart attack, coronary disease, and stroke.
  • Cessation of chronic “smoker’s cough.”
  • Lowered risk of lung cancer.

More generally, but no less importantly, smoking is a habit that exerts tremendous impact on the body and mind; it is something that holds the individual in its sway and in many ways takes control over your life. When you quit your smoking habit, and kick butts for good, you are regaining control over your state of mind and your action. You’re cutting ties with the habit that held you under its power.

For adults, meanwhile, this is as good an occasion as any to talk to your kids about smoking, and to make your own voice heard—making your own stance on smoking crystal clear.
