Healing the Wounds of Anxiety

Anxiety is not just a feeling; it is something that can have a very real impact on our minds and our bodies. For those who struggle with chronic anxiety disorders, that impact can be long-lasting. Wounds can linger—and still cause pain—even once you are in the recovery process.

The question is how do you take the first steps toward healing those wounds? What can you do to put yourself back together in anxiety’s wake?

Consider these suggestions:

Start exercising regularly. Nothing helps you keep stress at bay—or reinvigorate your mind and body—like getting up and getting moving. Get into a habit of working out often!

Take a vacation. You do not actually have to go anywhere, though you certainly can. What’s important is setting aside a little time to let yourself relax; even an afternoon spent resting or engaging in a favorite, low-key hobby can be healing.

Reach out to people. Make an effort at connection. Set up regular coffee dates, lunches, or evening get-togethers with people who can encourage you—or whose company you simply enjoy.

Stay in therapy—and support groups. Do not stop going to therapy or support group meetings just because you feel like you are “better.” The more you invest in dialogue, the deeper the healing process can go.

Practice mindfulness and meditation. Do something each day to provide yourself with some quiet focus. Even taking a “gratitude walk” can be healing.

Sleep well. Get those eight hours of REM sleep each night. A full sleep cycle can work wonders on mind and body alike.

Anxiety can do real damage. It can hurt us, and the hurt can linger. It can also be healed, however. Hopefully, these tips will send you down that path—and provide you with a foundation for lasting recovery.
