WEBINAR: How Brain-Gut Health Supports Recovery from Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Webinar Description

This is a past event (November 13, 2018)

The brain is affected by lifestyle, including nutrition, stress, drug use, smoking and sleep habits. These lifestyle factors can cause brain inflammation. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to be able to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Research continues to demonstrate how the brain’s connection to the Gut is far more important than understood in the past.

With good brain health, neuroplasticity occurs which allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and respond to new situations or to changes in their environment. Promoting brain health should be the goal in the treatment of co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders.

This workshop will provide a new lens for treatment, will review and discuss the effects of brain inflammation and review interventions, including non-pharmaceutical interventions, to support brain health which increases the person’s ability to partner in treatment and foster recovery.
