The Impact of Stress on Dual Disorders

Stress and dual disordersStress is the catch-all word for any time we’re overwhelmed or over-worked. Factors that cause people stress are money, relationships, jobs, family responsibilities, and worries about these or other aspects of life. The effects of stress shouldn’t be underestimated, and it’s no surprise to medical experts that stress can impact – or even cause – mental illness.

The emotionally well among us feel challenged to cope with the demands on our minds and bodies. That’s why people with mental illness, perhaps especially those with a dual diagnosis of substance abuse, often experience their symptoms worsening under stress. Feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, frustration and depression can be aggravated.

Chronic stress can affect mental health long-term. Research shows a strong connection between stress and the development of conditions such as anxiety disorders and depression. It can lead to drug or alcohol use as a “stress reliever.”

Once stress and its causes are identified, there are ways to alleviate those ill effects.

Relax.

So often easier said than done, but if you consciously take time out for yourself, take a break, learn to recognize the signs of tension and becoming upset, a short walk or deep breathing can make the difference.

Improve your lifestyle.

It’s true that a healthy diet and exercise are good for the body, but they’re just as good for the mind. Staying physically fit can keep extra pounds off, plus you can take your frustration out on the gym equipment or track where you run. Sleep also is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you get enough.

Reward yourself.

Everyone deserves a treat now and then. Let yourself enjoy small, simple pleasures for positive gains.
