Motivational Interviewing

WestBridge Community Services utilizes Evidenced Based Practices in providing treatment to individuals and families who experience co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders.  We put together the treatment process using the Stages of Treatment developed by the Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center and we create a personal recovery process using the Stages of Change developed by Dr. James Prochaska and Dr. Carlo DiClemente at the University of Rhode Island. These stages help us identify what treatment strategies would be most effective, they also help us to understand the process of change and treatment.

Motivational Interviewing, an EBP(motivationalintereviewing.org) is a brief intervention that was developed by Dr. William Miller and Dr. Stephen Rollnick to help people resolve ambivalence around change, make a decision to change and to develop a plan to change. This type of intervention helps to engage people in treatment, decrease resistance and provide opportunity to continue the treatment process.  As with other chronic illnesses, there is no one "magic wand" that "cures" mental illness or substance use disorders, however, over time people can develop new coping skills, insight and behaviors that support and enhance recovery and personal importance.
